Alex Stars on Formula Renault Eurocup Debut
After months of being out of a race car, Alex arrived at Nurburgring with his aim of getting up to speed and adjusting back into Single seater competition. Friday official test was Alex’s first opportunity to test the 1.8 litre Formula 3 spec car and after just 15 laps into the first session he had put his name top of the timesheets.
Alex said after the Friday Collective test that the car was very physically demanding, and he hoped to be able to qualify well ahead of the race on Saturday. He did not disappoint and achieved a P4 grid position for his first ever race at the iconic Nurburgring circuit.
Once again, the first race in Formula Renault Eurocup would bring the new experience of a race start in a Formula Renault car for Alex together with coping with the challenge of any first corner dramas. Starting from the second row of the grid, Alex got a good clean start and kept up to pace with the drivers ahead. During the 30 minute race, Alex maintained 3rd place with an eye on a podium finish for his first outing in the Renault. With just a few laps to go till the chequered flag, he lost a position to finish a very creditable 4th place.
Later in the afternoon came the tragic news that Arden team driver, Anthoine Hubert had lost his life whilst competing in a F2 race at Spa in Belgium. This news devastated the entire Arden team and the thoughts of the drivers and team were with the Hubert family.
Day 2 brought a sense of disbelief and sorrow in the awning. The drivers all decided that they would like to continue to race in memory of Anthoine.
Alex secured a P2 position in qualifying and a front row position for the race later in the day. Once again, a good clean start saw Alex jump the pole setter Oscar Piastri off the line, however the R-ace driver retook the lead after the first few corners and the race finished with Alex maintaining his P2 position.
Alex was very happy with his podium result in his first race weekend, and dedicated his podium to the Arden team.
