BACK OF THE F4 GRID START FOR QUINN
An unresolved handling issue hindered Alex Quinn as he attempted to set a competitive qualifying time in order to wrap up the F4 British Championship Rookie title, forcing him to start from the back of the grid at Silverstone.
With tricky wet weather conditions, the Northamptonshire circuit’s National layout proved slippery for drivers.
Quinn, who struggled in the previous day’s extremely wet first practice session, continued to be troubled by mystery gremlins with his Fortec Motorsports-run Mygale chassis as heavy drizzle covered the track.
The Racing Steps Foundation-backed driver eventually set an early benchmark lap time and although able to marginally improve in successive laps, they were not good enough to rise Quinn from the bottom of the time sheet.
Having briefly pitted with four minutes remaining, Quinn managed two flying laps in the closing stages before the chequered flag.
Quinn set his quickest time on his final lap, but again it was not enough to elevate him further and he will therefore provisionally start from the back of the grid for the opening race of the weekend.
He will also start the third and final race, which is formed from the drivers’ second quickest qualifying time, from the back of the grid.
“I suffered from a massive amount of understeer,” Quinn lamented.
“Hopefully it’s just an issue which we can iron out and not just a set-up problem.
“We had the same problem in yesterday’s wet practice yet it wasn’t bad in the dry conditions.
“I went out on new tyres for qualifying and they took time to warm up, but once I got going it felt like it was getting better. But the understeer just prevented me from doing much.
“The races are going to be a struggle, but I’ll be doing my best to scythe my way up the grid.”
