FOURTH FOR QUINN IN THRUXTON OPENER
Alex Quinn narrowly missed out on his second overall podium finish of the season in the opening race of the newly renamed F4 British Championship at Thruxton.
The 15-year-old, who began from seventh place on the grid, made a solid start to maintain his position. The Fortec Motorsports driver quickly began to threaten the JHR machine of Billy Monger, and eventually take sixth place by braking later up the inside of the Club chicane on lap four.
Any advance on that place though would be tough, with nearest rival James Pull over two seconds ahead. Quinn was helped, however, when Carlin team-mates Pull and championship leader Max Fewtrell collided at the Club chicane, promoting Quinn into fourth place.
With his sights now on a podium finish, Quinn began to close in on the tussling pair of Devlin DeFrancesco and third placed Sennan Fielding.
Fielding made his move at the chicane on the final lap, but was forced to run over the kerbs and lose time. Quinn attempted to take advantage, and heading up to the chequered flag, the pair ran side-by-side over the line, with Fielding holding on to his podium finish by 0.1 seconds.
Carlin’s Petru Florescu sprinted clear from DeFrancesco and Fielding to score race victory by over eight seconds. Quinn extended his lead in the Rookie class championship, with a further victory.
Quinn will line up for Sunday’s reversed grid race two, from fourth place.
